Biome Nest was a collaborative project initiated by the Jewellery-Linking Bodies Department at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in collaboration with Amsterdam UMC and the VU Medical Centre. Students worked in small groups to develop spatial interventions for four new patient rooms within the hospital’s Gynecological Oncology division.
Our group, consisting of Anne-Sophie de Lange, June Querido, Daria Zvarykina, and Hung-Fu Tsai, developed On the Cusp of Wandering over four months in 2024. Our focus was on the in-between spaces and transitions within the rooms. By creating details that follow the existing architectural grid and respond to its corners, we subtly altered the atmosphere of the interconnected spaces. Gradually shifting forms create a visual path through the room, inviting patients to wander while remaining aware of their physical presence and interactions.
Through small spatial interventions, the project sought to introduce comfort and a sense of movement into an otherwise clinical environment, considering how care can extend beyond function and become embedded within the spaces that surround the body.
